Présentation de l'exposition

Description

Le spectacle sous toutes ses formes comme le divertissement qu'il engendre, suggère à la création contemporaine des modèles infinis. Au-delà du spectacle témoigne de la diversité des engagements et des enjeux de tous ceux pour qui le monde contemporain est désormais une vaste scène. Submergée à l'envi par la télévision et le cinéma, les magazines et la bande dessinée, les affiches et la publicité, notre société voit la notion de spectacle engendrer méfiance (Guy Debord et Raoul Vaneigem) et passion pour tous ceux, qui n'en finissent pas de puiser dans "l'organisation des apparences", leurs modèles et leur style de vie. Le propos de cette manifestation est de montrer le foisonnement des oeuvres, la diversité des règles de fonctionnement, les nouvelles formes et les outils de la création d'aujourd'hui. Il est aussi de se demander ce qui subsiste de la fonction et du pouvoir critique de la création artistique, dès lors que celle-ci épouse et s'approprie les différentes stratégies du spectacle. Un programme de concerts et de performances conçu au coeur même de l'exposition, en collaboration avec les Spectacles Vivants du Centre Pompidou, témoigne de la multiplicité des échanges entre les différents territoires de la création contemporaine.[1]

Genèse du projet

Cette exposition est organisée en collaboration avec le Walker Art Center de Minneapolis (titre original : "Let's entertain").

Philippe Vergne : Il me faut d'abord vous préciser pourquoi j'ai décidé de faire référence à une pareille expression pour la version américaine de ce projet. Je me demande d'ailleurs encore aujourd'hui si le fait de vivre aux États-Unis et de voir, malgré moi, mon langage et mes propres expressions soumis aux conditions et aux réflexes d'une culture differente n'a pas en quelque sorte cristallisé ce projet que j'avais imaginé alors que je vivais encore en Europe. Toujours est-il qu'à Minneapolis, au cœur de la ville de celui qui longtemps a voulu qu'on l'appelle Prince comme du plus grand shopping mall d’Amérique, l'expression "let's entertain" est dans la bouche de chacun, au point que l'exposition n'a finalement plus pu porter un autre titre !

Bernard Blistène : Philippe et moi nous sommes perdus à analyser l'étymologie latine du mot qui combine inter (entre) et tenere (tenir). Je me vois mal essayer d'expliquer ici ce qu'il est advenu d'un mot anglais né au XVe siècle jusque dans le vocabulaire usuel de l'Amérique d'aujourd'hui ! Qu'entretient-on avec l'entertainment ? Le mot a évolué avec la société du spectacle jusqu'à s'affranchir d'une signification d'origine, restreinte, et désigner aujourd'hui tout un pan culturel et économique des sociétés libérales. [2]
