Description

Du 11 septembre 2002 au 6 janvier 2003, le Centre Pompidou, Musée national d'art moderne présente une rétrospective consacrée à l'oeuvre de Max Beckmann (1884-1950). Dans les pays anglo-saxons, Beckmann est considéré comme l'un des artistes les plus importants du )0(e siècle. Toutefois, en France, l'artiste ne bénéficie pas de cette notoriété. En présentant un choix d'une centaine de peintures, soixante oeuvres sur papier ainsi que trois sculptures, déployés sur 2 100 mètres carrés, le Centre Pompidou entend enfin contribuer à la reconnaissance de cette oeuvre majeure. L'exposition retrace l'itinéraire artistique de Beckmann, suivant les étapes successives de son oeuvre tout en s'attachant aux thématiques qui la traversent. Plusieurs de ses triptyques, les principaux cycles de gravures (L'Enfer, 1918-1919, La Foire, 1921, Voyage à Berlin, 1922) ponctuent le parcours de l'exposition, qui s'ouvre sur un autoportrait de l'artiste.
